It is mostly covered by salt marshes and mangrove trees, and is the home of the largest Naval Air Station (NAS Key West) in south Florida.
In the 1920s, Florida was in the midst of high real estate activity, where the state saw inflated real estate values and many coming into the state eager for profits.
