Sir Mortimer Barnett Davis (February 6, 1866 – March 22, 1928) was a Jewish Canadian businessman and philanthropist. [1] The mansion that he built in Montreal's Golden Square Mile has been renamed Purvis Hall and is today owned by McGill University .

The new school district was approved by the voters by a ratio of 3-to-1 on November 12, 1966, and District 16 took over the school system on July 1, 1967. The voters then approved a bond issue of $4,000,000 in November 1967. [2] Lawsuits challenging the district's creation and bond issue continued until December 23, 1969.

Little is known of the family's activities during the Middle Ages aside from Sir Otho Gilbert of Compton serving as High Sheriff of Devon from 1475 to 1476. It was descendants of this Otho Gilbert who would set out during the Elizabethan period on the family's “hereditary scheme of peopling America with Englishmen”. [2]
