Jul 4, 2012. #5. Re: How to position guide-ons? Remember that where these are mounted on the rear of the trailer may not be the widest point of your boat. Put them too close and you Might get hung up trying to unload. Measure the widest point of your boat and then add two inches for one inch gap each side.
Re: How I built trailer guide posts (with pics) My beam is also wider than the trailer. Have 1 1/4 inch tubing about 4 foot long on each side. Bend with an electrical conduit tubing bender to about 82* bend radius. Mounted to the inverted U channel of the trailer that runs parallel to the axle with 2 Ubolts per side.

These guides are made from 1-1/2" schedule 40 rigid electrical pipe, bent to shape in a hydraulic bender. Use PVC for "flags" if you want, but they can't possibly function as guides for your Tahoe I/O, which must be much heavier than my aluminum Starcraft. - Grandad.
Newbie boat ower. Currently apply a few fixes / improvements before hitting the lakes and rivers. If wondering, just bought a 1996 Bayliner 1700LS Bowrider with 120 HP OB. Boat is loaded on a Capri trailer with bunks. I seen a few boat trailers with guides (single and dual rails...
The guides are really nice for helping you locate the trailer, and they have held up to getting bumped by the boat a few times when loading in wind/current. The guide posts are not much help in getting the boat on the trailer, though. The couple of times I've bumped a guide post on a tricky approach, it almost caused more problems because the ...
The poles are mainly useful as a visual indicator of where the trailer is, which can be helpful if you have trouble seeing the trailer when backing up or when trying to load the boat. But they are not so good for guiding the boat onto the trailer; their brackets bend pretty easily if the boat slams into them. The poles I installed are "CE Smith ...
Mar 21, 2024. #19. Guides or poles depends on the trailer configuration. I have a #6000 rated “drive on” bunk trailer. A pair of 3” dia. x 60”, sch. 40 PVC poles line up the boat with the trailer, while keeping the transom centered. The target bunks upfront capture and hold the bow centered to the winch post.
Mar 1, 2011. #12. Re: Bunk or pole type guide ons? I had bunks and then went to four guide posts. The bunks were better especially in the wind, the guide posts are helpful when backing but the bow posts have to be carefully located to capture the boat in a breeze. In hindsight, the bunks were better, but it's much easier to wipe down the boat ...
May 31, 2018. #15. Guide poles will be directly behind your trailer fenders. If you can't see the fenders in your side mirrors, you won't be able to see the poles. If you can see your fenders in the mirrors, you don't need the poles. With one of my tow vehicles, the trailer hides behind the truck.
