National Normal University was a teacher's college in Lebanon, Ohio. Located in southwestern Ohio, it opened in 1855 as Southwestern Normal School and took the name National Normal University in 1870. Alfred Holbrook was the first president and the school's guiding force for most of its existence. He resigned in 1897 after 42 years.
There was a disagreement with some of the locals and it was said the Shakers placed a curse on the city to hinder the city's prosperity. In reality, the Shakers thrived in the area, and built a settlement about 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Lebanon called Union Village. [6] A local man, Malchalm Worley was their first convert.
The first settlement at West Lebanon was made in 1808. [2] West Lebanon was platted in 1833, and named after West Lebanon, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, the native home of a first settler. [3] A post office called West Lebanon was established in 1846, and remained in operation until 1907. [4]

The school district covers 81.9 square miles (212 km 2) primarily in the City of Lebanon and Turtlecreek Township in Warren County. [1] In addition to most of Lebanon, it also includes small portions of Union, Salem, Clearcreek, and Washington townships, as well as some small areas that have been annexed by the cities of Middletown and Mason.
