S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is a standard for public-key encryption and signing of MIME data. S/MIME is on an IETF standards track and defined in a number of documents, most importantly RFC 8551 .
STARTTLS may be used regardless of whether the email's contents are encrypted using another protocol. The encrypted message is revealed, and can be altered by, intermediate email relays. In other words, the encryption takes place between individual SMTP relays, not between the sender and the recipient. This has both good and bad consequences.
The most obvious application of a public key encryption system is for encrypting communication to provide confidentiality – a message that a sender encrypts using the recipient's public key, which can be decrypted only by the recipient's paired private key. Another application in public key cryptography is the digital signature.
When you make a purchase on AOL, we'll only finish the transaction if your browser supports SSL. As you enter your credit card number, SSL encodes it so it's transmitted in a format that prevents eavesdropping or data theft. When it's received by our secure server, your credit card number is never transmitted over the Internet again.
CMS is used as the key cryptographic component of many other cryptographic standards, such as S/MIME, PKCS #12 and the RFC 3161 digital timestamping protocol. OpenSSL is open source software that can encrypt, decrypt, sign and verify, compress and uncompress CMS documents, using the openssl-cms command.
The OpenPGP standard has received criticism for its long-lived keys and steep learning curve, [6] as well as the Efail security vulnerability that previously arose when select e-mail programs used OpenPGP with S/MIME.
