Ancema blanka, the silver royal, [2] [3] is a species of lycaenid or blue butterfly found in the Indomalayan realm. The species was first described by Lionel de Nicéville in 1894. [ 2 ] [ 3 ]
The butterfly has a wingspan of 30 to 32 mm. The male white-banded royal above is a shining bright blue up to base of 4 in the forewing. On the hindwing is a mid-costal white patch. The male has a large but inconspicuous brand on the upperside of the hindwing. The female is a pale dull powdery blue with a broad black border on both wings.
Male P. argus have royal blue wings with a black border, white, wispy fringe, and metallic silver spots on the hindwings as well as spurs on their front legs. Females of this species are generally brown and more subdued in color, but also have the metallic spots on the hindwings. The undersides of the male and female butterflies are very similar.
The wing colors vary with viewing angle, a phenomenon referred to as structural color. [2] In the female, the dorsal side is more camouflaged while the male presents with a vibrant blue. [ 11 ] In the male, the outer layer of the cover scales are long and narrow ( 250 μm × 50 μm ), 2 μm apart, and parallel to the wing plane. [ 11 ]
