The NBG asked the religious communities in the RCOB and the Nederlands Israëlitisch Kerkgenootschap in 1990 whether there was a need for such a translation, to which there were affirmative responses. On 25 February 1993, the NBG and KBS signed a declaration of intention to realize a new translation of the Bible.

In 1967, the Council for Contact and Deliberation regarding the Bible (Raad voor Contact en Overleg betreffende de Bijbel; RCOB) was founded as an ecumenical platform to facilitate communication between the Dutch Bible Society (Nederlands Bijbelgenootschap; NBG) and the Catholic Bible Foundation (Katholieke Bijbelstichting; KBS) regarding translation and use of the Bible.

Philips of Marnix was again asked to translate the Bible in 1594 and 1596, but he was unable to finish this work before he died in 1598. His translation influenced the later Statenvertaling or Statenbijbel. The first authorised Bible translation into Dutch directly from Greek (using the Textus Receptus) and Hebrew sources was the Statenvertaling.
