The provinces of Vietnam are subdivided into second-level administrative units, namely districts (Vietnamese: huyện), provincial cities (thành phố trực thuộc tỉnh), and district-level towns (thị xã).
Bà Rịa is located 90 km east southeast of Ho Chi Minh City and 20 km northwest to the centre of the petroleum and beach city of Vũng Tàu. Bà Rịa borders Châu Đức District and part of Phú Mỹ Town to the north, Vũng Tàu to the south, Long Điền District to the east, and Phú Mỹ to the west.
The Port of Phú Mỹ (pronounced foo-me) is a port cluster on Cái Mép–Thị Vải river, with the main eponymous piers, and the river flow into South China Sea (Vietnamese: Biển Đông) at the Gành Rái Gulf, it serves as the main deep water cargo port for Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area, as well as for the resort town of Vũng Tàu.
