Idris (Arabic: إدريس, romanized: ʾIdrīs) is an ancient prophet mentioned in the Qur'an, who Muslims believe was the second prophet after Adam. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] He is the third prophet mentioned in the Quran.
Idris was the great-grandchild of Hasan, who was the son of Fatima and Ali and grandson of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. [3] He was born and raised in Arabia. [4] His paternal half-brothers Muhammad al-Nafs al-Zakiyya and Ibrahim had been killed by the Abbasids during an abortive rebellion.
The founder of the Idrisid dynasty was Idris ibn Abdallah (788–791), [1] who traced his ancestry back to Ali ibn Abi Talib (died 661) [1] and his wife Fatimah, daughter of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad.
Most Muslims identify Enoch with as the Qur'anic prophet Idris. However, some etymological research suggests that the Greek version of the name Ezra (Esdras) is a more plausible origin for the name Idris. Aside from Enoch and Ezra, Idris is also frequently identified as Hermes Trismegistus.
