    I sand all of my pens to to 12,000 grit using Micro-Mesh. I then apply three individual coats of Doctor's Woodshop Walnut Oil/Carnauba Wax & Shellac Woodturning finish. After the third coat I put a little bit of the Walnut Oil Paste Wax on my finger and the heat retained in the wood melts the wax as you spread it.

Most live center tips that come with the lathes are not. this lets the tip of the mandrel wallow around after wear has it's merry way with things. Mandrels in theory are suppose to have a 60° seat for a live center of mating angle to seat in.

But look in the library here and you will see a fairly complete list of pen kits showing tube sizes, and bushing sizes. There is also an app that can show this.

    Go slow. A quarter inch or so before pulling out and cleaning the dwarf off. I also use water with a touch of dish soap as a lu to can't to keep things cool. For turning, I rough out a cylinder and get it close to size with a very sharp roughing gouge. I finish using a negative rake, circular carbide cutter.
