After comparing prices on 50 popular grocery items across every major category, my data shows that Aldi has lower prices on average. The retailer beat out Walmart on 28 of the 50 items checked – especially in categories like produce, dairy and baking ingredients.
Across most categories, Walmart came in first or second when it comes to price. “Walmart is generally in a position to take a lower markup on groceries because they’re trying to get you in so you buy higher-markup items in the rest of the store,” says Clark Howard, a consumer shopping expert and host of The Clark Howard Podcast

While both stores have great deals, according to grocery information site Aisle of Shame, Aldi offers the best prices overall. There is, however, an exception — goods prone to price variation, as from inflation, volatility, or regional variation.
Walmart's and Aldi's price ranges usually fall within a few cents to a dollar of each other for most pantry and fridge basics, even when accounting for regional price variation. Comparing each store's house-brand prices, for example, show a dozen cage-free, large, brown eggs are $2.75 at Aldi, and $2.72 at Walmart.
