What Is the Social Security Blue Book? The Blue Book is a listing of impairments that the SSA considers serious enough to potentially keep someone from working. It details the medical criteria the SSA uses to determine if specific conditions are disabling enough to keep someone from working.
We will determine the degree to which your medically determinable mental impairment affects the four areas of mental functioning and your ability to function independently, appropriately, effectively, and on a sustained basis (see 404.1520a (c) (2) and 416.920a (c) (2) of this chapter).
The Listing of Impairments (the listings) is in appendix 1 of this subpart. It describes for each of the major body systems impairments that we consider to be severe enough to prevent an individual from doing any gainful activity, regardless of his or her age, education, or work experience.
When a claimant’s impairment meets, or medically equals, the criteria of a listed impairment, and the claimant is not performing substantial gainful activity (SGA,) we find him or her disabled. We group the impairments in the Listings by each of the major body systems.
The SSA maintains a list of all of the impairments that can qualify for automatic approval. These impairments are referred to collectively as the "Blue Book" (as a nod to the historical color of the manual), the "listing of impairments," or just "the listings".
Listing of impairments. Blue Book listings are split into sections for adults and children, reflecting the different ways Social Security examiners assess the effect of a particular condition on those younger than 18 and those 18 and older.
