This image took quite a path to get to the Nostalgia & History forum. My friend, the late Dick Humphreys shot the original B/W negative in his hometown in 1967. Later on Larned, KS resident, the late Lee Berglund obtained a 5x7 print from him. Probably in trade for another print.
Looks like D&SNG in this instance emulated a typical Silverton train from right around 1940. Engine #477 is one of the seven K-28 class engines requisitioned by the Army in 1942 for use on the White Pass & Yukon during WWII; all of them were scrapped following the end of the war.
Pontin also sold prints, usually 5x7's to railfans. I don't know how you got on his mailing list. I've picked up a few prints over the years from photo sellers at train shows. I believe the negative collection, which must have been nothing short of fantastic, wound up at some New England railroad museum operation, but I can't recall where.
I just ran across these two images of the KL&L Shay No. 7. I'm not familiar with the St. Regis Paper Co. logging operations so I have no idea where and when these images were made by the late Jim Wren. The third image is also a Wren image (or at least, it's in his collection) and is dated April 1964 but no other info is on the 5x7 print.
