Zama (座間市, Zama-shi) is a city located in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 June 2021, the city had an estimated population of 130,667 and a population density of 7,400 persons per km 2. [1] The total area of the city is 17.58 square kilometres (6.79 sq mi). The city hosts the United States Army Camp Zama base.

Sōbudai-mae Station opened on 1 April 1927 as Zama Station (座間駅). [1] With the opening of the nearby Imperial Japanese Army Academy ( Rikugun Shikan Gakkō ), the station was renamed Shikan-gakkō-mae Station ( 士官学校前駅 ) on 1 June 1937. [ 1 ]
The station opened on 1 March 1927, as Shin-Zama Station (新座間駅). [1] It was renamed Zama-Yūen Station (座間遊園駅) on 1 July 1937, and on 15 October 1941, it was renamed Zama Station. [1] Station numbering was introduced in January 2014 with Zama being assigned station number OH31. [2] [3]
In 1948, Zama was separated from Sagamihara, which became a city in 1954. The town of Shibuya dissolved in 1955, with the southern portions merging with Fujisawa, and the northern portion reverting to the status of village until absorbed by Yamato town in 1956.
The main commissary for the Camp Zama community is located on SHA. Larger than the commissaries of Camp Zama and Sagami Depot, the SHA commissary stocks approximately 6000 items.
