Stories from our neighbourhood (Arabic title حكايات حارتنا), also known as Fountain and Tomb, is a collection of stories by the Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988.
The book covers a year in the life of an inner city drug market at Fayette & Monroe Streets in Baltimore. Simon and Burns spent over a year interviewing and following around the people who lived on the Fayette & Monroe corner. Although written like a novel, the book is nonfiction; it uses the real names of those people and recounts actual events.
The residents have demonstrated enthusiasm to keep the neighborhood clean and free from violence and so far they have proved to have done a great job. In this chapter, the authors talk about block clubs and social organizations that helped the community keep the status of the neighborhood; graffiti free and good sanitation.
