Born in Enfield, near London in about 1774, Field began his working life as a farmer and butcher. [1] In 1800, at the age of 26, he was convicted of receiving nine stolen sheep from his brother, Richard [2] and in 1806 was transported to the then newly established colony of Van Diemen’s Land, now Tasmania.
Van Diemen's Land was the colonial name of the island of Tasmania used by the British during the European exploration and colonisation of Australia in the 19th century. The island, inhabited by Aborigines, was first encountered by the Dutch ship captained by Abel Tasman in 1642, working under the sponsorship of Anthony van Diemen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.
Known as Van Diemen's Land, the name changed to Tasmania, when the British government granted self-governance in 1856. [1] It was a colony from 1856 until 1901, at which time it joined five other colonies to form the Commonwealth of Australia .
In 1832 he issued a Sketch of the history of Van Diemen's Land, illustrated by a map of the island, and an account of the Van Diemen's Land Company, [1] octavo, the map is by John Arrowsmith. George Augustus Robinson (22 March 1791 – 18 October 1866) was an English born builder and self-trained preacher who was employed by the British colonial authorities to conciliate the Indigenous Australians of Van Diemen's Land and the Port Phillip District to the process of British invasion and colonialisation. John Pascoe Fawkner (20 October 1792 – 4 September 1869) was an early Australian pioneer, businessman and politician of Melbourne, Australia.In 1835 he financed a party of free settlers from Van Diemen's Land (now called Tasmania), to sail to the mainland in his ship, Enterprize.
Curr was born in Hobart, Tasmania (then known as Van Diemen's Land), the eldest of eleven surviving children of Edward Curr (1798–1850) and Elizabeth (née Micklethwaite) Curr. [1] His parents had moved to Hobart from Sheffield, England in February 1820, where Curr's father went into business as a merchant.
During her husband's period as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land, she became known for her philanthropic work and her travels throughout south-eastern Australia. After John Franklin's disappearance in search of the Northwest Passage , she sponsored or otherwise supported several expeditions to determine his fate.
