Named after U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver, the building was designed by the Nashville firm of Marr & Holman in the Modern Style, and construction began in 1948. The Fred D. Thompson U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building is a United States federal courthouse of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. It is located at 719 Church Street, northeast of the older Estes Kefauver Federal Building and United States Courthouse.
Originally named Broad Street, [4] the eastern end of Broadway ended at the shipping docks on the Cumberland River. It was one of the first roads to run east–west in Nashville, and the first public high school in the city was built on the road in 1875.
Tulip Street Methodist Church and St. Ann's Episcopal Church survived, thanks to church members who left their burning homes to form bucket brigades to save them. Much of East Nashville southeast of Fifth and Woodland Streets was destroyed. Total property loss was estimated at more than 1.5 million dollars. [9]
