Commodus (/ ˈ k ɒ m ə d ə s /; [5] 31 August 161 – 31 December 192) was a Roman emperor who ruled from 177 until his assassination in 192. For the first three years of his reign, he was co-emperor with his father Marcus Aurelius.

This claim that Commodus never killed men before an arena audience has been in the article since September 2005, with embellishments added over time. It is cited to Cassius Dio 73.10.3 but CD says nothing like this and in fact says the opposite: he often slew in public large numbers of men and beasts !
