The Grand Canyon Railway (reporting mark GCRX) is a heritage railroad which carries passengers between Williams, Arizona, and the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The 64-mile (103 km) railroad, built by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , was completed on September 17, 1901.
In 1901, the SF&GC was sold under foreclosure to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, who completed the remaining fifteen miles to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. [4] [5] The company was renamed the Grand Canyon Railway and the Santa Fe's first passenger train from Williams to the Canyon ran on September 17, 1901. [6]
In November 1894, Southern Railway had contracted J. D. Elliott of Hickory to build a depot in Bryson City. A frame building with wooden ornament and broad eaves was completed in 1895. [ 4 ] Around the turn of the 20th century, four passenger trains, between Asheville and Murphy, would daily stop at the station.
The railroad owns the Smoky Mountain Trains Museum in Bryson City, North Carolina; located across Greenlee Street from the Bryson City Depot. Grand Canyon Railway No. 29 is an SC-3 class 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type steam locomotive, built by ALCO's Pittsburgh Works in 1906 for the Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad (LS&I) in Upper Michigan. The sole member of the LS&I's SC-3 class, it was originally numbered 14, but was renumbered to 29 in 1924.
The main line extends from a connection with the line of The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company at Williams, Ariz., to Grand Canyon, Ariz., a distance of 63.810 miles. The Grand Canyon Railway also owns 13.232 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 77.042 miles of all tracks owned.
