Michigan Central Railroad Engine Repair Shops, also known as the Tonn and Blank Building, was a historic railroad engine repair building located at Michigan City, LaPorte County, Indiana. It was built in 1851–1852 by the Michigan Central Railroad. It was constructed of Joliet limestone and measured 255 feet long and 62 feet wide.
The original house was built in 1857 and is a two-story, brick structure that now serves as the rear wing. Between 1905 and 1909, the main block was constructed. [2] The main house is a 2 + 1 ⁄ 2-story, maroon brick with limestone trim designed as an English Manor house, with 38 rooms, 10 bathrooms, and seven fireplaces.
In 1903 community leaders approached the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration, who ran St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette, to build a hospital in Michigan City. St. Anthony's Hospital was founded, funded in part by a donation in the name of Mrs. John H. Barker. The cornerstone was laid in 1903. [2]
