Wichmann II the Younger (also spelled Wigmann or Wichman) (about 930 – 22 September 967) was a member of the Saxon House of Billung. He was a son of Count Wichmann the Elder and his wife Frederuna, [1] a niece of Queen Matilda. The cousin of Emperor Otto I became known as a fierce enemy of the ruling Ottonian dynasty.
Matilda was the daughter of Hermann Billung. She first married Baldwin III, count of Flanders. [1] They had: Arnulf II, Count of Flanders [1] After Baldwin's death, Matilda married Godfrey I, Count of Verdun, with whom she had several children: Frederick (d. 1022), count of Verdun [2] Godfrey (d. 1023), duke of Lower Lorraine (1012–1023) [2]
Bernard I (c. 950 – 9 February 1011) was the Duke of Saxony between 973 and 1011, the second of the Billung dynasty, a son of Duke Herman [1] and Oda. He extended his father's power considerably. He fought the Danes in 974, 983, and 994 during their invasions. He supported the succession of Otto III over Henry the Wrangler.
