In 2010, Dutch operator VEON agreed to acquire most of the telecom assets of Orascom, including Jazz, in a $6.5 billion deal, creating the world's fifth-largest mobile network operator by subscriber base. Under CEO Alexander Izosimov, VimpelCom Ltd. acquired Orascom Telecom and Wind Telecom from Naguib Sawiris in 2011. [19] After a number of acquisitions, as of December 31, 2011, VimpelCom Ltd. had 205 million customers across 20 countries, [20] and by 2012 it was the 13th largest mobile network operator in the world by number of subscribers.
