In France, there are 37 medical schools, known locally as "UFR de médecine" (Unités de Formation et de Recherche or "Unit for training and research" in English). They are part of universities and are associated with one of France's 29 university hospital centers (CHU). [1] [2] But they are traditionally called "Facultés de médecine".
They were limited to basic and mid-level procedures, barred by law from practicing advanced medicine. With the creation of the University of France in 1808, [12] medical schools reopened their faculties and expanded across France. [8] At this time, the hospital became more prestigious than the medical school.

It is the medical school of the first university in France according to its dean. [1]
