After being lobbied by Ford Hotels president Jack Udd on May 3, 1940, Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King nixed the idea of building a standard brick-faced Ford Hotel, preferring the construction of a "first class hotel", more befitting the prime location on Elgin Street.
