Jonathan Edwards (October 5, 1703 – March 22, 1758) was an American revivalist preacher, philosopher, and Congregationalist theologian. Edwards is widely regarded as one of America's most important and original philosophical theologians.
His death was initially attributed to "natural causes" by the CIA. After the Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse scandal erupted, the Pentagon acknowledged that the cause of death was " asphyxia due to smothering and chest compression", and that his body showed "evidence of blunt force trauma to the chest and legs".
Jonathan Edwards was born John Evan Edwards on July 28, 1946, in Aitkin, Minnesota. At the age of six, he moved with his family to Virginia, where he grew up.
