Erie, [a] officially the City of Erie, is a city on the south shore of Lake Erie and the county seat of Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the fifth-most populous city in Pennsylvania and the most populous in Northwestern Pennsylvania with a population of 94,831 at the 2020 census .
The state's western toehold extends to the Great Lakes at Erie. Pennsylvania is bordered on the north and northeast by New York; on the east by New Jersey; on the south by Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia; on the west by Ohio; and on the northwest by Lake Erie. It has a small border on Lake Erie with Canada.

The Erie–Meadville, PA Combined Statistical Area (CSA) is made up of two counties in northwestern Pennsylvania. The United States Office of Management and Budget [ 2 ] has recognized the Erie and Meadville areas along with the counties of Erie and Crawford to make a Combined Statistical Area , located in northwestern Pennsylvania.

When numbering pool exhaustion became a threat in the 2000s, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) approved a numbering plan split in December 2009, that would have assigned area code 582 to most of the northwestern portion of the territory, including Erie, by 2012. The region includes Allentown, the third-most populous city in Pennsylvania, the neighboring eastern Pennsylvania cities of Bethlehem and Easton, and its more rural suburbs. The region was once a hub for American heavy manufacturing. Its economy is now more diverse, and it has one of the state's fastest growing populations.
The city of Erie is the business center and cultural hub of Northwestern Pennsylvania. [3] The compiled population of the region was estimated to be 938,516 in 2015. Although the only county with population growth was Butler, the deficit for all other counties was within 3%. The region also includes the Erie-Meadville, PA Combined Statistical Area.
