    I need the symbol for number --- it is atop the numerical 3 on the keyboard. I should therefore be able to get that symbol by pressing SHIFT+the number 3 key. Instead of getting the symbol which I need I instead get the symbol for the British Pound currency. I need the symbol for number which is shown on the key for the numerical "3" .

    Now I have checked and I am using the UK English keyboard, been through all the settings and definitely using UK keyboard so I am stumped and any help would be appreciated. I can cope with the " and the @ switch but it is very awkward not being able to get the pound sign. Using a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse. Regards. Andrew

    I am a British user, but UK and US keyboard layouts seem to be identical: certainly I now get the @ symbol using Shift-2, rather than the " symbol that my physical keyboard shows. I have no idea why the keyboard has suddenly stuffed up, but it's very irritating that the physical keyboard and the actual symbols entered now fail to match.

    Then press shift+3 to get the pound symbol and hit winkey+space to go back to US keyboard. A possible solution: get the Microsoft keyboard layout creator tool and remap a key combination to write the £ symbol.

  9. Just a thought. I hope your system is password protected. Choose passwords with care if for instance you use the recovery Console (advanced optional feature on XP but a life saver sometimes) make sure it has a password you can type from the keyboard, and take care with the characters use; maybe do not include a British Pound sign.
