InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile is a hotel in Chicago, United States.The hotel currently occupies two multi-story buildings.The historic tower, or "South Tower," is a 471-foot (144 m), 42-story building which was completed in 1929 originally as the home of the Medinah Athletic Club. [1]
The 500-room hotel opened its doors in July 2006 and is run by Marriott under their Renaissance brand. The property features a 100,000 sq ft (9,300 m 2 ) exhibition hall, 48,000 sq ft (4,500 m 2 ) of meeting room space, and a 28,000 sq ft (2,600 m 2 ) ballroom, all of which can be divided to provide many configurations.
Research Park gained the approval of the board of trustees in November 1999 and established its governance with the University of Illinois Research Park Limited Liability Company in March 2000. The Research Park opened its first building in 2001 and grew into a 200-acre technology hub for corporate research and development operations.
The hotel's 3,000 guest rooms were rebuilt into 1,544 larger and more elegant rooms; 600 were converted to double-sized rooms with two adjoining bathrooms. The renovated hotel helped to sustain a revival period in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood. The newly renamed Chicago Hilton and Towers reopened on October 1, 1985. [11]
The restoration resulted in 359 guest rooms, six suites, and 5,800 square feet (540 m 2) of meeting space. The 22-story hotel is now equipped with a fitness center, business center, innbar, and a street-level Lavazza café with outdoor seating area. The latest renovation gave the rooms a boutique hotel feel reminiscent of the 1920s.
The hotel remained one of the city's most important until the 1950s, when large hotels became less popular nationally. In 1957, Southern Illinois University began renting office space in the building, as it had recently opened a satellite campus in East St. Louis; the university purchased the hotel outright in the 1970s.
