The local beer market is currently occupied by two main brewers. The largest of Sri Lanka's brewers is the Lion Brewery, which is also the oldest brewery in the country. It produces over 90% of Sri Lanka's beers. In 1988 it constructed a new brewery at Biyagama to replace the century-old facility at Nuwara Eliya.

Lion was originally an India Pale Ale (IPA) but the beer style was changed in the 1960s to a lager. [4] Lion remained the number one beer in India for over a century from the 1840s until the 1960s. After this, another Mohan Meakin brand, Golden Eagle, took the number one place until the 1980s, when Kingfisher became number one. [4]
W. M. Mendis and Company, is a Sri Lankan beverage alcohol company, with its headquarters in Negombo, Sri Lanka. It is as known one of Sri Lanka's oldest and most renowned liquor manufacturers in Sri Lanka.
