The University of Delaware (colloquially known as UD, UDel, or Delaware) is a privately governed, state-assisted [1] [2] land-grant research university in Newark, Delaware, United States. UD offers four associate's programs, 163 bachelor's programs, 136 master's programs, and 64 doctoral programs across its ten colleges and schools. [ 4 ]
It consists of six contributing buildings: Old College, Recitation Hall, Recitation Annex, Alumni Hall, Mechanical Hall, and Elliott House. These buildings formed the nucleus, and until the 20th century, the entire campus of Delaware College. [2] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. [1]

Memorial Hall served as the university's library from 1925 to 1963. It was the first facility shared by the women's and men's colleges (which continued to operate separately until 1945), and its prominent location halfway between the two at the center of the Green made the library the focal point of the campus. [ 2 ]
The house in its present form is a two-story, gable roofed brick structure measuring six bays across. The original structure was expanded during the 19th and early 20th centuries to its present size. After 1888, it was converted to commercial use. In 1947, it was purchased by the University of Delaware and renovated in the 1960s for office space.
As UD athletic director from 1984 to 2009, Edgar N. Johnson oversaw construction of the Carpenter Center, intending it to eventually serve as the new home for UD's men and women's basketball. [ 2 ] The arena opened in 1992 and was designed by HOK Sport (now known as Populous ), who have been involved in more than 150 sports and recreation projects.
