Zombies and skeletons can even spawn with boots enchanted with Feather Falling. As another example, some mob farms will use water streams that kick the mobs up as much as a half block before the fall, which can also affect the result. The only sure way is to use a damaging mechanism that is more controllable, like timed suffocation.
I already have built a mob grinder but wanted to express my joy your work on this tutorial has brought to me. First, this is a great layout for a tutorial. It has everything you need; materials to start with, step by step instructions, explanations of why and bonus tips. Doing a static page tutorial makes it very easy to reference in a build.

I would use mob grinder from Mob Grinding Utils and an absorption hopper. Maybe you could use bamboo spikes for something cheaper. Remember Mob Swabs can get you easy monster eggs to customize your spawners. Thanks to Apotheosis. You could also spawn enemies with cursed dirt or whatever it is called from Mob Grinding Utils.
Best basic mob grinder design for 1.20 Help I haven't played in a while, is the best basic mob grinder still the old four squares with water leading to the middle, or is there a better design with equal level of building simplicity that exists now?
It's a plus shape of 2-wide water streams with open trapdoors, and the square room likely has carpets or slabs placed in a specific pattern to prevent spiders from spawning. The design relies on random mob pathfinding leading the mobs across the trapdoor channels, which in itself is already quite a slow thing.
Depends on the farm design. If your farm is based on moved moving, you have to be 24 blocks away, because moved don't spawn closer to you, but you can't be further away from the farthest block, than 40 blocks, because mobs that far stop actively moving.
That album is a collection of shots that I took of the grinder during different phases of construction - the only phase that isn't there is the final one, where I put a roof over the whole thing. This thing SUCKS, guys. I stood at my collection pit all night (left it on and went to sleep), woke up and only had like 33 each of the different mob ...
I’m trying to optimize a mob xp/loot farm and my problem is that spiders keep spawning on my platforms and messing with the system. They don’t fall into the canals used to push them into the kill zone very often and when they do, they don’t tend to fall into the hole.
Why wont my mob grinder work? Ive made it 121 blocks above the ocean, theres no light anywhere, ive put torches on top of the roof, and the gamemode is set to hard, yet mobs still dont spawn inside (they spawn on land though). Ive tried everything, but they still wont spawn.
