The Diocese of Rapid City (Latin: Dioecesis Rapidopolitana) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory, or diocese, of the Catholic Church in western South Dakota in the United States It is a suffragan diocese of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
The Diocese of Rapid City was founded as the Diocese of Lead in 1902. [2] St. Patrick's in Lead served as the diocese's first cathedral. [3] The See city was transferred to Rapid City in 1930 and St. Mary's Church downtown was renamed the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at that time.
The Catholic Diocese of Lead was relocated and became the Diocese of Rapid City in 1930. St. Mary's Church was renamed the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at that time.
