Gilbert grew to 5-foot-7, wiry and strong, and became a star athlete. He went to Pacific University, competing in football, wrestling, track and field, gymnastics and boxing.
Gilbert developed the Erector Set, a construction toy, in 1913 (preceded by the similar Meccano set conceived by Frank Hornby in 1898 which he developed and patented as "Mechanics Made Easy" in 1901 [9]). The complex originally housed the factory for making Erector Set toys, invented by Alfred Carlton Gilbert. The last official toy sets were produced there in 1967 and the company then went out of business. The Gilbert Co. assets were purchased by Gabriel Toys and moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. [1]
Gilbert successfully lobbies the government to allow him (and other toy manufacturers) to resume the production of toys, in particular the building toy known as an Erector Set, for Christmas, thus earning Gilbert the name "The man who saved Christmas." Ultimately, Gilbert's brother Frank returns from the war in time to celebrate Christmas.
