The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is an American confectioner, wholly owned by Swiss confectioner Lindt & Sprüngli.The company was founded by and is named after Italian chocolatier Domenico Ghirardelli, [1] who, after working in South America, moved to California.
The site expanded to four acres by 1927 and had moved to 24-hour production by 1930. The company was incorporated in 1934 and employed around 300 people. During World War II the factory moved over to munitions, with the company's products manufactured by Rowntree's under license.
The Visitor Centre store also conducts viewing tours of the Parkside factory site that is located behind the store. Melbourne has six Haigh's stores. Three are in the CBD, including a flagship store in the Block Arcade, while the newest store is on Elizabeth Street. There are also the suburban stores in Hawthorn, Eastland and Toorak.
