The most widely accepted subfamilies are the Mylodontinae with Mylodon as the type genus and the Lestodontinae, whose type genus is Lestodon, which sometimes also includes Paramylodon and Glossotherium (sometimes also listed as belonging to the tribes Mylodontini and Lestodontini.
