The Coon Rapids Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the Mississippi River located in Brooklyn Park and Coon Rapids, Minnesota. It is approximately 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown Minneapolis. Between 1914 and 1966, it provided hydroelectric power generation for northern Twin Cities suburbs.
The Coon Rapids Regional Park is centered around the Coon Rapids Dam on both sides of the Mississippi River. There are visitor centers on both sides of the dam, but this narrative will concern itself with only the east side.
It was built on choice acreage of the M.E. Dunn Farm on the eastern shore of the Mississippi River in Anoka County, near Coon Creek, for the purpose of generating electricity to be used in Anoka and Hennepin Counties. The Coon Rapids Dam was completed in late March 1914.
