Not actually true. Sometimes they are laid in multiple wythes in foundries and cement kilns. If you can afford a real masonry fire place, you can afford the extra 3 inches of width and 1.5" of depth, 4 .25" wide fire brick need for laying normally, IMHO. Sliding down the slippery sloop of cheapness in my opinion.

Rub off with burlap. I simplified this as I am tired but if you need more detail just ask. Sand is sand. It will move.

Where I work, we have 12 Heatilator fireplaces. The units range in age from 10 years old to1 year old. The "fire brick" liners are starting to crumble. Some of them are cracked and some of them are crumbling in the center of the back wall. The liners are 3 piece units, the back and each side. The liners are about 1/2 inch thick.

First, a person would be hard pressed to install thin brick with a "system" for less than the cost of full brick installed. A fair price for most full brick is in the neighborhood of $1.50/sf, but I'm hard pressed to find thin brick for less than $3/sf. Some is fired then cut, others claim that they cut then fire.

Currently working on a total renovation of an 1850s historic home in Brooklyn. Balloon wood frame construction throughout the house. Looks like brick infill was thrown in between the wood joists as a fire stopper between the framing of the attached row houses. Up until demo the walls were covered with withe wood lathe and plaster.

I had to repair my brick masonry front porch, and removing the railings was required. Now that the new brick has set, I need to drill new holes for the middle railing posts on both sides of the top landing. (I didn't have to touch the other holes.) I have an abrasive cup bit to drill into the brick and mortar. How long should I wait before I ...

    www.contractortalk.com/threads/removing-stucco-cement-from-interior-brick-wall...

I wanted to expose the brick to give my living room a rustic feel. I saw my neighbor’s exposed brick wall (south facing wall) and it looked great. I ripped down some sheetrock today and found a combination of brick and brick covered by stucco or cement. Looks like I’m in for more work than anticipated. Which is fine b/c I have a few days to ...

Repair the top course of brick if need be. Then repour with a new cap with a little rock in it. If needed, he would take down some of the courses. When I was there everything appeared to be solid except for the cracks in the top. I agree that it looks like it is coming through the mortar top and then going down. The fireplaces are being used.
