Rashid was a lunar rover built by MBRSC to be launched onboard Ispace's lander called Hakuto-R. The rover was launched in November 2022, but was destroyed as the lander crash landed in April 2023. [26] It was equipped with two high-resolution cameras, a microscopic camera to capture small details, and a thermal imaging camera.
The rover was launched as part of Chandrayaan-2 on 22 July 2019 and was destroyed with its lander, Vikram, when it crashed on the Moon on 6 September 2019. [ 2 ] [ 7 ] In July 2023, Chandrayaan-3 launched, carrying new versions of Vikram and Pragyan , [ 8 ] which successfully landed near the lunar south pole on 23 August 2023.
The range, however, was operationally restricted to remain within walking distance of the lunar module, in case the rover broke down at any point. [21] The rovers were designed with a top speed of about 8 mph (13 km/h), although Eugene Cernan recorded a maximum speed of 11.2 mph (18.0 km/h), giving him the (unofficial) lunar land-speed record. Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) is a NASA program to hire companies to send small robotic landers and rovers to the Moon. Most landing sites are near the lunar south pole [1] [2] where they will scout for lunar resources, test in situ resource utilization (ISRU) concepts, and perform lunar science to support the Artemis lunar program.
The orbiter will also be tasked with surveying lunar resources such as water ice, uranium, helium-3, silicon, and aluminium, and produce a topographic map to help select future lunar landing sites.
