Salt Fork was named for a mineral lick along the creek's course. [5] Plans to dam the creek for use as a water source began in 1956, then switched to planning for use as a recreational area in 1960. An earthen dam was completed in 1967, with the construction of recreational facilities initiated in 1968. Salt Fork Lodge opened in 1972 [4]

Salt Lick Creek [1] is an 11.1-mile-long (17.9 km) [2] tributary of the Susquehanna River in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania in the United States. [3]Salt Lick Creek rises at the outlet of Page Lake at the village of Lakeside in New Milford Township and flows northwest to the borough of New Milford, then turns north and joins the Susquehanna at the borough of Hallstead.
By the mid-19th century, the Blue Licks area had become a health resort, due in large part to the nearby saltwater springs that had been used for "salt making" since the 1770s. The mineral water found in the springs was rumored to cure everything from asthma to gout. By 1896, however, the area's last spring had gone dry.
