On 11 October 1795, Paris was divided into twelve arrondissements. They were numbered from west to east. The numbers 1–9 were on the Right Bank of the Seine. The numbers were 10–12 on the Left Bank. Each arrondissement was subdivided into four quartiers, which corresponded to the 48 original districts created in 1790.
In 1800 the arrondissement of Paris was established as part of the Seine department. In 1962 it absorbed the communes of the former arrondissements of Saint-Denis and Sceaux. The 1st arrondissement of Paris (I er arrondissement) is one of the 20 arrondissements of the capital city of France. In spoken French, this arrondissement is colloquially referred to as le premier (the first). It is governed locally together with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th arrondissement, with which it forms the 1st sector of Paris (Paris-Centre).
The 2nd arrondissement of Paris (II e arrondissement) is one of the 20 arrondissements of the capital city of France. In spoken French, this arrondissement is colloquially referred to as deuxième (second/the second). It is governed locally together with the 1st, 3rd and 4th arrondissement, with which it forms the 1st sector of Paris.
The 9th arrondissement of Paris (IX e arrondissement) is one of the 20 arrondissements of the capital city of France. In spoken French, it is referred to as le neuvième ( [nœvjɛm] ; "ninth"). The arrondissement, called Opéra, is located on the right bank of the River Seine .
