In the academic year 1959–1960, the University of Santo Tomas was allowed to offer a four-year Classical Liberal Arts Course simultaneously with the regular course offered by the Faculty of Philosophy, in accordance with Government Recognition No. 254, series of 1966, dated 22 July 1966.
In 2018, LEAPMed, a special preparatory course for the UST medicine program was offered to a limited number of highly exceptional high school graduates ranking among the Top 200 of the University entrance exams, taught completely under the supervision of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery [2]
The University of Santo Tomas General Santos (UST; Filipino: Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas General Santos) is a private, Catholic higher education institution in General Santos, Philippines. The UST General Santos is the first UST campus in Visayas and Mindanao. It is an extension campus of UST Manila. The Main Building of the campus opened in 2024.
The college was established in 1926 as the College of Liberal Arts where it offered four-year programs leading to the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science, and a two-year program for associate in arts which served as preparatory courses for the law and medical schools. [2] The offerings of the college became diversified.
In 1931, UST Engineering included Plane and Spherical Trigonometry on its curriculum. [2] The number of students enrolling in Civil Engineering decreased in 1934. So as to compensate this, another program was offered in the college, Mining Engineering. This new program was placed under the Mining Department which was headed by Theodore Lawson.
UST was allowed to grant a licentiate degree in medicine. From 1877 to 1901, 329 students were granted the licentiate degree. José Rizal studied medicine at the university from 1878 to 1882, where he was granted the rare privilege of studying simultaneously the preparatory course of medicine and the first year of medicine. The college is located in the third and fourth levels of Saint Raymund de Peñafort Building in the northeastern part of the UST campus. The college shares the building with the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters which occupies the first and second levels. On July 5, 2015, the building was hit by fire affecting at least 4 classrooms. [5]
Historically, the colleges are named as Faculty, College, Institute, School, or Conservatory. There are 19 colleges that offer civil courses and 3 faculties that also offer ecclesiastical programs. The Faculties of Ecclesiastical Studies, though governed by its particular statutes, is still an integral part of the university. [1]
