Dolby 3D uses a Dolby Digital Cinema projector that can show both 2D and 3D films. For 3D presentations, additional filters are used in the projector, one filter each for the left eye and right eye. Each filter allows different frequencies of red, green, and blue light to pass through each of them.
The system is capable of delivering up to 48 cd/m 2 on unity-gain matte-white screens for 3D (and up to 106 cd/m 2 for 2D), a substantial improvement on current generation 3D systems which deliver in the range of 10 to 14 cd/m 2 for 3D. The result is improved brightness, color, and contrast compared to traditional xenon projectors.
A theater can purchase a film projector for as little as $10,000 [69] (though projectors intended for commercial cinemas cost two to three times that; to which must be added the cost of a long-play system, which also costs around $10,000, making a total of around $30,000–$40,000) from which they could expect an average life of 30–40 years.

A polarized 3D system uses polarization glasses to create the illusion of three-dimensional images by restricting the light that reaches each eye (an example of stereoscopy). To present stereoscopic images and films, two images are projected superimposed onto the same screen or display through different polarizing filters .
RealD 3D cinema technology is a polarized 3D system that uses circularly polarized light to produce stereoscopic image projection. The advantage of circular polarization over linear polarization is that viewers are able to tilt their head and look about the theater naturally without seeing double or darkened images. [3]
