Bowes Castle is a medieval castle in the village of Bowes in County Durham, England. Built within the perimeter of the former Roman fort of Lavatrae , on the Roman road that is now the A66 , the early timber castle on the site was replaced by a more substantial stone structure between 1170 and 1174 on the orders of Henry II .

It was acquired by John Bowes, the museum's founder, from a Parisian jeweller in 1872. [1] The swan, which is life-sized, is a clockwork-driven device that includes a music box.
The Bowes family had been prominent in County Durham, with their ownership of the estate and castle of Streatlam but in 1713, George's father acquired (from his wife's family) the Gibside estate which included some of the area's richest coal seams and led to the family becoming immensely wealthy through the coal trade.
