Berkshire County Council established its meeting place in the Assize Courts on The Forbury in Reading. [16] As the council's responsibilities grew, there was a need for more office space. West Berkshire Council is the local authority for the area, based at the Council Offices on Market Street in Newbury. The district is divided between the Newbury and Reading West and Mid Berkshire parliamentary constituencies, the latter also extending into parts of Reading Borough .
