Christchurch has listings in the former two categories. As of July 2011, there were 315 historic places and seven historic areas listed. In August 2011, Heritage New Zealand started the process of removing listings of buildings demolished after the earthquakes, starting with the Manchester Courts and the NZ Trust and Loan Building entries. Christchurch is a major city in the Canterbury Region, and is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand.With a Māori history stemming back to the thirteenth century as the domain of the historic Waitaha iwi, Christchurch was constituted as a colonial outpost of the British Empire in 1850.
It was located in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, adjacent to Canterbury Museum, where the building still stands unused, as of 2019. [5] Christchurch City Council committed funds to buying land for a new gallery in 1995 and purchased the Christchurch Art Gallery site in 1996. A competition to design the new gallery was launched in 1998.
Some are cave baches, [6] [7] [8] with Whare Moki being considered the oldest surviving example in New Zealand. [ 9 ] [ 10 ] [ 11 ] Most of the baches were, in 1995 or 2016, recognised as heritage assets by either Heritage NZ or by the Christchurch City Council under the resource management act.
Gladys Mary Goodall QSM JP (née Bishop, 2 June 1908 – 23 March 2015) was a New Zealand photographer whose work was used for scenic postcards of the country.Her photographs are held in the collection of Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa and the National Library of New Zealand.
