Provinces of the future South Sudan are coloured in red. Anglo-Egyptian Sudan was divided into eight provinces, which were ambiguous when created but became well defined by the beginning of World War II. The eight provinces were: Blue Nile, Darfur, Equatoria, Kassala, Khartoum, Kurdufan, Northern, and Upper Nile.
In 1991, Sudan reverted to a structure of 9 provinces (wilaya) corresponding to its 9 former historic regions. In 1994, the number of provinces increased to 26. Western Kordofan was abolished in 2005, and restored in 2013. On 9 Jul 2011, the 10 southern states became part of independent South Sudan. [1]
Sudan is divided into 18 states, or wilyat. The state with the largest population is Khartoum with 7,993,851 and the state with the smallest population is the Northern State with 936,235 as of 2018. [1] As of 2015, the Northern state is the only state in Sudan not to have surpassed 1 million in total population.
With the adoption of the Interim National Constitution of Sudan [1] and the Interim Constitution of Southern Sudan, [2] the ten states of South Sudan are, however, now divided into counties.
