Yanmar was founded in March 1912 in Osaka, Japan, [2] by Magokichi Yamaoka. [3] [4] When the company began in 1912, it manufactured gasoline-powered engines. [5] In 1920 the company began production of a small kerosene engine. [6] In 1933, it launched the world's first practical small diesel engine, the HB model. [5] [7] [8]

It is a four-stroke, vertical, water-cooled diesel engine. It is built around two cylinders (hence the "2" in 2GM20) of 75 mm in diameter and 72 mm in stroke, adding up to 0.635 litres in displacement: each cylinder is roughly the size and volume of a 300 ml soft-drink can.
1.5 L (1,493 cc or 91.1 cu in) I3, with a single overhead camshaft, four valves-per-cylinder, and common-rail direct fuel injection. This engine was designed in 1998 with the related 4-cylinder variant R 420 SOHC. In 1999, VM granted Hyundai the license to manufacture both engines.
