The commissioned officer ranks of the United States Army can be split into three categories, from highest to lowest: general officers, field grade officers and company grade officers. The rank was in use by both the Union Army and the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The rank was below sergeant major and above ordnance sergeant. The same rank insignia was used by both armies. Both armies varied the colour of the stripes by assigning red for artillery, yellow for cavalry, and blue for infantry.
CQMS Insignia (Irish Army) The rank of company quartermaster sergeant (CQMS) (ceathrúsháirsint complacht in Irish) is also used in the Irish Army. It is an actual rank and is subordinate to the company sergeant (equivalent to a company sergeant major). The CQMS is in charge of supplies, transport, stores, weapons, ammunition and accommodation.

Considered a higher grade than sergeant major (or than command sergeant major from 1968), the Sergeant Major of the Army didn't receive its unique rank insignia until 1979. In 1968, the rank of command sergeant major was established as an assistant to the commanding officer at battalion, brigade, division, and corps levels.
