The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company, known as Stop & Shop, is an American regional chain of supermarkets located in the northeastern United States. From its beginnings in 1892 as a small grocery store, it has grown to include 406 stores chain-wide.
In June 2000, global grocery corporation Royal Ahold bought 51% of Peapod's shares, [13] and in August 2001, Royal Ahold bought out the entire company. [14] As a result, Peapod cancelled its contracts with all grocery companies except for Royal Ahold's two main American chains, Stop & Shop and Giant Food (Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle). [14]
Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover was a combined supermarket chain owned by the American subsidiary of the Dutch retailer Ahold.The company took its form in 2004, after Ahold decided to combine the operations of its New England–based Stop & Shop chain with its Landover, Maryland-based Giant Food chain to create the largest supermarket company in the Mid-Atlantic States.
The Shrewsbury Stop & Shop at 539-571 Boston Turnpike will also close. Other Worcester Stop & Shop locations at 949 Grafton St and 940 West Boylston St. will remain open.
