The XLR11-RM-5 engine was first used in the Bell X-1.On October 14, 1947, the X-1 became the first aircraft to fly faster than the speed of sound (Mach 1). The XLR11-RM-5 was also used in the X-1A and X-1B, and as a booster engine in the U.S. Navy's D-558-2 Douglas Skyrocket turbojet (where it was designated the XLR8-RM-5).
The first known example is a 7.2 litres (440 cu in) engine in the 1920 French Corona car; [1] however it is not known if any cars were sold. The Thames 307E is a small panel van launched by Ford UK in June 1961 [1] and based on the recently introduced Ford Anglia 105E. It replaced the Thames 300E and, like its predecessor [ 2 ] it was marketed as the Thames 5 cwt or the Thames 7 cwt van.

The Meteor was a tank engine developed from the Merlin in World War II. It was detuned, did not have a supercharger, and ran on lower-octane pool petrol (as did the early Merlins). Manufacture was transferred from Rolls-Royce to Rover, who developed the smaller Meteorite V-8 engine from it.
